545: United action against the Tories on public sector pay

July 27, 2021 in Bulletins

Public sector workers, headed by those in the NHS and education, are rightly furious after the Tories finally made their pay announcements. The 3% to be awarded to NHS staff, who have been on the front line risking their lives during Covid, is nowhere near what has been lost over the last decade. That’s why many health workers have been demanding 15%. But to rub salt in to the wounds, this rise must come out of the existing NHS budget. This means brutal cuts on top of all the Tory austerity we’ve already had. It’s even worse for teachers, with […]

NSSN 542: Strike victories show fighting unions vital

July 6, 2021 in Bulletins

The NSSN sends our solidarity and congratulations to members of Unite and NEU after their members won important victories after both sets of workers took week-long strike action. This shows again that organised fighting unions are the most important protection workers can have to defend their livelihoods and keep themselves and their families safe. This is essential as the Tories announce their plan to lift Covid restrictions on July 19th, despite infections rising again. Whatever the Government says, unions need to demand that agreed safety procedures and protections in the workplace must remain in place as long as the risk […]

NSSN 473: Support the strike wave!

February 25, 2020 in Bulletins

In the last fortnight, the NSSN has held two impressive rallies in Coventry and London to ‘Fight the new Tory anti-union laws! Support the strikes’. In both meetings, we have given a platform to workers and union reps currently taking action. It is clear from the number who have spoken that there is a strike wave taking place. Some of it is localised but there are also national action, such as in universities, 6th form colleges and of course, the impending re-ballot by the CWU in Royal Mail. Many of these disputes are winning victories. The NSSN will continue […]

“Capitalism is killing our people”

November 19, 2012 in Reports, Strikes

A report of the 2012 Midlands NSSN Conference by Dave Gorton (UNITE) Craig Johnston from the RMT got the Midlands NSSN Conference off to a resounding start with the cry “never mind where the money’s coming from; where’s the money gone?” Transport workers were not going to take the blame for the capitalist crisis they hadn’t caused. Craig related the solidarity of railworkers such as those who were forced to strike on the Newcastle Metro – “not a wheel turned”. And it wasn’t just the so-called skilled workforce that were being represented; the RMT was now linking the claims and […]
