The NSSN has been proud to give solidarity and support to the BMA and the Junior Doctors as they took their first strike action for four decades on January 12th. NSSN 271: Junior Doctors force Tories back At the last minute, facing a strike that had already seen over 3,000 operations and 17,500 appointments cancelled, the Tories stepped back from the brink and withdrew the immediate threat of the imposition of new contracts for junior doctors. As a result, the BMA suspended the three days of industrial action on December 1, 8 and 16. NSSN 270: Support the Junior Doctors’ strikes! The BMA Junior Doctors have voted for strike action in an incredible show of strength that is the perfect answer to the Tories’ (anti) Trade Union Bill. Following a ballot of more than 37,000 junior doctors in England, 98% voted for strikes and 99% for action short of strike action on a 76.2% turnout. NSSN 268: Reinstate #CWU2!

Clive, a long-standing leading rep in the CWU had an appeal against unfair dismissal rejected by British Telecom on 9 November, confirming his sacking after 38 years of service. Clive is chair of the CWU Birmingham, Black Country & Worcester branch and is a leading lay rep of the union. NSSN 258: Reinstate sacked Royal Mail rep John Vasey now!

John Vasey, a CWU postal rep in Wakefield, West Yorkshire has been sacked on what his work colleagues recognise as stitched up charges. John was suspended by Royal Mail during the general election on allegations connected with the non-delivery of election material. Since John’s suspension, the Wakefield office has been run by an increasingly threatening management, who have driven through cutbacks placing unmanageable workloads on a reduced number of postal workers.
