NSSN 570: UCU HE strike ramps up

We headline this week’s NSSN bulletin with the UCU higher education strike, which re-starts next week. Last December, staff at 58 universities took 3 days of action against exploitative working conditions, casualisation, attacks on pensions and a decade of pay cuts. After re-balloting, 10 more HE colleges have joined the dispute. In addition, Unison members at 10 universities have also passed the 50% ballot threshold and will be striking alongside the UCU. From a Carmarthenshire Unison member, writing in a personal capacity. On the 1st April 2014 Carmarthenshire Labour led Council (yes a Labour council!) will remove the trade union secondments for Unison, GMB and Unite. Before this anti –trade union attack, that will be applauded by the Con-Dems and the Taxpayers Alliance, Carmarthenshire County Council was one of the worst in Wales in what it was prepared to pay for in regard to trade union secondments.
