PROTEST
CONTINUES AT SALTEND - HUNDREDS ATTEND MASS PICKET IN SUPPORT OF
LOCKED-OUT WORKERS
At 6:00am on Monday 28th March,
800 construction workers and other trade unionists assembled outside
the gates of the Saltend construction site. Many of those in
attendance were still recovering from the journey down to London and
back on Saturday to protest against the governments vicious cuts
agenda. But another early morning was needed as 400 construction
workers have now been locked out of the site by the contractor
Redhalls for nearly a fortnight.
Delegations from West Burton,
Pembroke and other construction sites joined the mass picket, while
representatives of the West Burton site reported that all other
workers on their site had downed tools today in solidarity with
Saltend workers.
A demonstration in the centre of
Hull is planned for mid-day today, when the construction workers will
be joined by other trade unionists from across the public and private
sector.
UPDATE:
At mid-day today, over 1000 trade unionists joined the protest in the
centre of Hull to support locked-out Saltend workers. The protest was
addressed by speakers from UNISON and NUT representing public sector
workers, as well as Keith Gibson from the Saltend Lock-out Committee
and NSSN Convenor Rob Williams.
A video of the
city centre protest can be viewed on the Hull Daily Mail website
