Doctors reject Con-Dem pension offer:
Build for another public sector strike allaince!
The public sector pensions struggle could go two
ways. Yesterday we saw the doctors’ vote for industrial action
on 21st June by a margin of 79%.
Junior doctors, the furthest away from retirement
but longer to pay increased contributions and longer to work,
voted 92% for action. Coming on the back of the 400,000 strong
10th May strike, this could be the trigger for another
co-ordinated strike.
Yet today, the Local Government executive of
Unison have given the go ahead for a ballot of their council
members on the final offer from the government. Rather than
campaign for a rejection of a deal that's hardly changed since
before N30, Unison's leaders will be hoping that its accepted.
We call on Unison's members in the councils to follow the
example of the doctors and also Unison and GMB members in the
NHS and totally reject the deal. Then all those unions still
standing - the overwhelming majority of the N30 strike coalition
who delivered 2 million workers on strike - should agree a new
date for a co-ordinated strike, in effect a 24 hour public
sector general strike as the beginning of sustained action. But
this time the unions could be joined by the doctors, the nurses
in the RCN, the brave prison officers.... even the police? This
is the clearest sign that it’s the Con-Dems who are weak,
divided and isolated and can be defeated. Now's the time to keep
our nerve, not settle for a deal that still means we pay more,
work longer to get less when we retire.
We appeal to all workers and anti-cuts campaigners young and old
to come to our conference and debate the way forward to defend
pensions. But especially if you're a
Unison member, come and help us put pressure on your union
leaders and also give your fellow members the confidence to put
a cross next to the box marked NO!
