January 4, 2018 in News

The NSSN sends solidarity and congratulations to one of our affiliated unions the Bakers’, Food & Allied Workers Union (BFAWU) and their members in McDonalds, who have won a famous victory. We supported their historic strike in Crayford and Cambridge on September 4th, the first in the company in the UK and the NSSN has been a longstanding part of the Fast Food Rights/Hungry for Justice campaign that was launched by the Bakers’ union. We believe that the action and the unionisation of often young workers into the union has been central to the award of the pay rise. (See […]

June 15, 2017 in News

As our supporters and affiliates will know, this year’s conference of the National Shop Stewards Network (our 11th) is due to take place in London on Saturday July 1st. Hundreds of trade union and anti-cuts campaigners will be preparing to take part in discussions and debates about the crucial struggles and disputes facing working people. Of course, a prominent issue would be how we organise a mass movement to take on a weak and discredited Tory Government. The NSSN is not affiliated to any political party but we unapologetically campaigned for Jeremy Corbyn’s pro-worker manifesto in the General Election and […]

March 8, 2016 in News

The fourth annual conference of the Yorkshire Shop Stewards Network was held in Leeds on Saturday 5th March, attended by representatives from ten different trade unions from across the region. Opening the “Stop the Union Busters” morning session, Andy Budds (RMT transport union executive member) said it was no accident that it had been the Tory transport minister who first announced the (anti) Trade Union Bill because the government wants to break the RMT. Recalling that his union’s former general secretary, the late Bob Crow, had been accused of being a ‘dinosaur’, Andy asked “who’s the real dinosaurs?” when the […]

North West Water pensions strike

February 19, 2016 in News

GMB members gathered to picket and protest outside the of United Utilities’ Warrington HQ at Lingley Mere, Great Sankey, in a protest over pensions. The pickets were being watched by a handful of company ‘marshals’ from just inside the perimeter. GMB steward, Steve explained that the company have served notice that they wish to close the ‘defined benefit’ pension scheme, and replace it with an inferior ‘defined contribution’ system. “The difference is that under defined benefits you know what you’re going to get, and the company plug any gaps, but under defined contribution you know what you pay but not […]

The employers have now agreed that this will apply to volunteers only and those not covered by the agreements. In addition, the employer has dropped proposals to fit tracker devices in vehicles and the introduction of random drug and alcohol testing. This shift by the employers followed five days of […]

Unite & NSSN drop ‪#‎SportsDirectShame banner at St James’

January 13, 2016 in News

In September of 2015 organisers of Unite the Union’s Unite Community project and officers of the National Shop Stewards Network began to interact, with an aim toward building a common purpose for advancing the causes of the wider labour movement. What the two groups had in common beyond working-class aims was a common enemy in the multi-billionaire scourge of Sports Direct UK’s owner, Newcastle United Football Club megalomaniac Mike Ashley.   Together the Unite the Union and NSSN’s north east section mounted campaigns against Sports Direct in this socialist heartland. Receptions were sometimes mixed, complicated by the number of people […]
