Last Tuesday, council workers and school support staff in England, Wales and Northern Ireland received a 2-year pay offer from the local government employers with the main headline of a 2% rise for each year. The local government unions will now consider this offer, which falls far short of their 5% pay claim.   Workers at the three threatened Burntisland Fabrication – BiFab – yards have won a guarantee that their jobs and wages will be secured, at least until April 2018. Their decisive action over the last week, and those of the GMB and Unite trade unions, has delivered this important breakthrough.
