NSSN 361: Support the CWU & come to NSSN Solidarity Forum this Saturday in Birmingham

October 18, 2017 in Bulletins

In last week’s NSSN bulletin, we headlined the strike that was due to take place from tomorrow by CWU members in Royal Mail. Disgracefully, a High Court judge has granted an injunction to management, forcing the union to postpone the strike for seven weeks to take part in external moderation. This is despite the CWU smashing the undemocratic voting thresholds in the new Tory Trade Union Act – the first national test of this anti-union law. This ruling has exposed the true meaning of the Tory’s intentions – to attempt to block the right of workers to take industrial […]

NSSN 350: Support Birmingham Bin Workers!

July 31, 2017 in Bulletins

The NSSN is supporting the struggle of refuse collectors in Birmingham. This is by one of our local supporters:- Since June 30th, refuse collectors employed by Birmingham City Council and members of Unite the Union have been taking industrial action against the employer’s proposals. They will see a reduction in their staffing numbers by 113 posts (20%), changes in working practices and extending the working week. The Labour controlled council has argued that the plans will achieve a necessary ‘modernisation’ of the service but Unite members argue that this will further reduce the numbers on each wagon resulting in too […]

349: Support strikes, stop union attacks, celebrate victories!

July 26, 2017 in Bulletins

NSSN 349: Support the strikes, stop the union attacks, celebrate the victories! This week’s NSSN bulletin opens with some long-running disputes by Unite, PCS and RMT members. We also include another attack on the POA and a fight in Northern Ireland against an attack on NIPSA, including two of its prominent members. We appeal for solidarity for all these struggles. But to show that it’s possible to win significant victories, we include the successful legal action by PCS against the Government imposition of new inferior redundancy terms in the civil service and Unison’s defeat of their employment tribunal fees. Low […]

NSSN 348: Support PCS fight against DWP office closures

July 12, 2017 in Bulletins

The government is abandoning unemployed, sick and disabled people, and putting hundreds of jobs at risk, by confirming today the closure of almost one in 10 jobcentres. The news comes as we announce our members in Eastern Avenue jobcentre in Sheffield, one of the threatened sites, will strike again from 17 to 21 July following a week-long walkout in June. The Department for Work and Pensions has announced just six of the original 78 jobcentres earmarked for closure will remain open, and only 11 of the 80 planned to co-locate with local authorities have been given a reprieve – and […]

NSSN 345: Organise to get the Tories Out

June 14, 2017 in Bulletins

The ‘Strong and Stable’ Conservative Government of Theresa May is hanging by a thread! The incredible response to Jeremy Corbyn’s General Election campaign showed once and for all that workers and their families are furious after 7 years of Tory austerity and a lost decade where our incomes have been cut by a fifth. But while the Tories may be wounded, weak and more divided, they’re not out yet. How can we get rid of them? We have to mobilise the workers and the young people who were inspired to vote for Corbyn’s anti-austerity Labour manifesto – many because […]
