331: After massive march, fight together to defend #OurNHS

March 7, 2017 in Bulletins

What a time to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) on March 8th – with struggles and disputes that have a big involvement of women workers. We mention some in our bulletin but keep up to speed with any IWD events through #IWD and #IWD2017 on twitter   The NSSN salutes the massive #OurNHS demonstration that filled the streets of London last Saturday. It was called by the Health Campaigns Together grassroots campaign. To get a flavour of the march, please look at the following videos, the first from Leicester campaigners who have been fighting to save the Glenfield children […]

NSSN 329: Rail unions unity needed to stop DOO at Southern Rail

February 21, 2017 in Bulletins

The NSSN salutes members of ASLEF who voted to reject Southern Rail’s offer to end their dispute. We call on the union to join with the RMT, who disgracefully were excluded from talks brokered by the TUC, to plan co-ordinated action to stop management’s Driver Only Operation (DOO) plans. The starting point for this is a commitment not to have separate talks with the company. It is therefore a concern that there are reports that ASLEF and Southern Rail are meeting for secret talks today. We don’t believe that this is the message of the ASLEF ballot last week. […]

NSSN 328: Support BA Mixed Fleet strike!

February 15, 2017 in Bulletins

Low-paid British Airways cabin crew in Unite the Union are due to strike this week from Friday to Monday for another 4 days on top of the 11 days of action they have already taken this year. But instead of negotiating, BA have been trying to intimidate workers on £12,000 a year through removing bonuses and staff travel. The NSSN will continue to give our full support and solidarity and we appeal to all our supporters and affiliates to do so as well. The workers have been using Bedfont & Feltham Football & Social Club as their HQ – […]

NSSN 327: Support RMT on Southern Rail!

February 8, 2017 in Bulletins

The transport union RMT, its members, and many across the union movement are fuming at the proposed Southern Rail ‘deal’. It was made with the leadership of the Aslef transport union and presided over by the TUC – they and the Tories hope it will settle the Southern Rail dispute. We don’t believe that this is reflected on the ASLEF picket lines, where members have expressed real solidarity with RMT guards and station staff, who have taken 28 days of strike action. We call on Aslef members to reject this offer and call more coordinated strikes with the RMT. […]

NSSN 316: Support POA! March against education cuts!

November 15, 2016 in Bulletins

At 4am this morning (15 Nov), the NEC of the POA Prison Officers union called on its members to take protest action against health and safety concerns due in large part to the savage cuts in staff numbers. Supporters of the National Shop Stewards Network (NSSN) today have today visited prisons to show our solidarity with the POA (one of our nine affiliated unions) and their members. At Wormwood Scrubs in West London, NSSN national chair Rob Williams spoke to POA members saluting their action, “You have been given letters from the Governor saying that the POA is calling illegal […]

NSSN 300: NSSN Conference – “Now is the time to ramp things up”

July 7, 2016 in Bulletins

The sound of establishment figures crashing out of office provided the backdrop to the 10th annual National Shop Stewards Network conference. “In all the tumult, let’s not forget that this week we saw the downfall of a Tory prime minister” said PCS president Janice Godrich to huge applause. The Economist referred to the referendum result as “an outpouring of fury against the establishment” and there was plenty of this fury in the hall, from bakery workers dismissed and bullied to teachers preparing a national strike. The wonderful message of hope brought by Yann Venier, secretary of the CGT trade union […]

NSSN 299: This Saturday July 2! NSSN Conference 2016 – get ALL the Tories OUT!

June 29, 2016 in Bulletins

NSSN 299: This Saturday July 2! NSSN Conference 2016 – get ALL the Tories OUT! The 10th annual NSSN Conference takes place this Saturday July 2nd in Conway Hall in London in the aftermath of the EU Referendum that has precipitated a political crisis for the Tories. Cameron, the architect of the biggest austerity offensive unleashed on working-class people for 90 years is history and his party is split down the middle. Now we need to get rid of the rest of the Tories! Yet incredibly, this has been the signal for Blairite Labour MPs to try and stage a […]

NSSN 298: French striker confirmed for NSSN Conference July 2nd

June 22, 2016 in Bulletins

Trade union activists in the UK have been following the incredible events in France over the last couple of months – although mainly on social media as there has been a virtual blackout by the mainstream broadcasters. They clearly don’t want workers here to be inspired by the mass strikes and demonstrations against the government’s new labour law. The NSSN is delighted to announce that we are able to continue a growing tradition of rounding off our annual conference with an international speaker. Two years ago, Ginger Jentzen from the $15Now struggle in the USA spoke and last year delegates […]
