303: Fawley workers defeat ‘race to the bottom’ exploitation

August 3, 2016 in Bulletins

Striking Unite members working for contractors NICO at the massive Fawley refinery in Hampshire have won an important victory for trade unionists against the bosses’ race to the bottom. This strike was against contractors exploiting migrant workers from Bulgaria and Italy and paying £48 for a 10 hour shift instead of the £125 union agreed rate paid to British workers. This attack by the employers on trade union terms and conditions has been at the heart of the austerity drive to boost profits at the expense of workers across Europe. It is the attempt to drive down wages that fuelled […]

NSSN 212: Reject local govt pay proposal – keep the strike on

October 1, 2014 in Bulletins

It appears that the local government employers have made a set of new proposals in the pay dispute to the unions – Unison, Unite and the GMB. It should be noted that any improvement is a result of the threatened strike on 14th October which is part of a three-day rolling action that also covers the NHS and the civil service; coming after the million-strong public sector strike that took place on 10th July. However, the detail of the proposal reveals that it is nowhere near enough to settle this dispute. Council workers who have suffered four years of pay […]

August 22, 2013 in Appeals, Bulletins, International, News, Reports, Strikes

In Lewisham in south London, triumphant health campaigners’ posters announce: “We’ve won! Justice for Lewisham Hospital.” Local people are celebrating a famous victory. This January health secretary Hunt tried to downgrade Lewisham hospital’s accident and emergency departments and its high risk obstetric department.
