NSSN 376: Feb 3rd NHS demos – “Prepare for battle!”

February 7, 2018 in Bulletins

National Shop Stewards Network (NSSN) supporters took part in protests around the country last Saturday on the day of action called by Health Campaigns Together (which we are affiliated to) and the People’s Assembly. Tens of thousands took to the streets, including on the emergency London demonstration, to send a message to the Tories that we want the privatisers out of the NHS and more beds and staff in. In last week’s bulletin, we showed an interview with a nurse Jacqui Berry, who is also a Unison NEC member and on the NSSN steering committee about the crisis in […]

NSSN 375: Demo to #FixOurNHS this Sat Feb 3rd

January 30, 2018 in Bulletins

The National Shop Stewards Network (NSSN) is supporting the national day of action this Saturday February 3rd to protest against the crisis in the NHS. There will be protests around the country, including an emergency demonstration in London. One of the leading organisers is nurse Jacqui Berry. She is also a member of Unison’s NEC as well as the NSSN steering committee. In the build up to Saturday, Jacqui has done this interview that shines the spotlight on the crisis in the NHS and why we need a mass campaign against the Tory health cuts:-   ‘The NHS In Crisis […]

NSSN 374: UCU vote to strike for 14 days to defend pensions

January 23, 2018 in Bulletins

University pensions strike update: Universities to be hit with 14 strike days if USS row not resolved – from UCU website (22 Jan): Universities face initial 14 days of escalating strike action if a row over changes to the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) is not resolved. Sixty-one universities would be hit with a wave of strikes and other forms of industrial action by UCU members expected to start on Thursday 22 February. Other action would include union members working strictly to their contract, which would see them refusing to cover classes or reschedule classes lost on strike days as […]

373: Carillion scandal shows why we need massive Feb 3 demo

January 16, 2018 in Bulletins

The NSSN sends solidarity to Carillion workers after the company went into administration. No worker should lose their job or pension because of mismanagement. Carillion like many others, have benefited from privatisation. But it’s the workers who have paid the price, such as the 200 outsourced employees at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon, who took strike action in 2012 against job losses and pay cuts. We call for all Carillion’s outsourced workers to be taken back in-house in the public sector and employed directly. We also support the demand of Mick Cash, the general secretary of the transport […]

358: Tory Party demo, Black History Month & NSSN Solidarity Forum

September 27, 2017 in Bulletins

In this week’s NSSN bulletin, we headline some major events for your diary. On Sunday, thousands of trade unionists and anti-cuts activists will be heading to Manchester for the People’s Assembly demonstration outside the Tory Party Conference. We also have an article about Black History Month starting on October 1st in its 30th year, which we encourage our supporters to take part in. We also advertise a forum that we are putting on in Birmingham on Saturday October 21st to discuss how we build support and solidarity for fight to scrap the public sector pay cap and the other […]

346: March together Saturday: fight together to get Tories out!

June 27, 2017 in Bulletins

The General Election result has shocked the Tories and the media but it has confirmed that we’ve had enough of brutal cuts. Jeremy Corbyn’s manifesto gave workers the opportunity to express their anger. On the massive March 26th 2011 TUC demonstration, up to 750,000 trade unionists and anti-cuts campaigners marched against Cameron’s austerity plans. The NSSN produced a flyer that day that warned “This is the fight of our lives…literally.” The tragedy of Grenfell has laid bare the effects of cut-backs, privatisation and de-regulation that the Tories call ‘red-tape’ but actually protect lives. The likes of Boris Johnson praise emergency […]

NSSN cancels conference to support July 1st demo

June 15, 2017 in News

As our supporters and affiliates will know, this year’s conference of the National Shop Stewards Network (our 11th) is due to take place in London on Saturday July 1st. Hundreds of trade union and anti-cuts campaigners will be preparing to take part in discussions and debates about the crucial struggles and disputes facing working people. Of course, a prominent issue would be how we organise a mass movement to take on a weak and discredited Tory Government. The NSSN is not affiliated to any political party but we unapologetically campaigned for Jeremy Corbyn’s pro-worker manifesto in the General Election and […]

NSSN 288: Get the Tories out! March together on April 16

April 13, 2016 in Bulletins

First it was the U-turn on tax credits, then Personal Independence Payment after Iain Duncan Smith’s resignation and now on top of the division over Europe, Cameron has been shaken by the Panama tax exposé. The Tories really are on the edge! The question is how do we push them over it?! It’s clear that an increasing number of people want to fight and take action alongside the Junior Doctors, teachers and the steelworkers fighting to save their jobs.  Last Saturday, thousands demonstrated against Cameron outside Downing Street, in Sheffield on the PCS demonstration against the closure of BIS offices […]

NSSN 285: Tories split as IDS resigns – joint action to stop the cuts!

March 23, 2016 in Bulletins

Millions of workers would have enjoyed their Friday night as the news filtered through that work and pensions secretary Iain Duncan Smith had resigned from the government because of the planned cuts to Personal Independence Payments (PIP). All those who have suffered from the brutal benefit cuts and sanctions as well as civil service workers who have fought job cuts, office closures and pay freezes will find his ‘redemption’ a bit far-fetched. But this episode has finally confirmed that what is potentially a weak Tory government – only elected by 24% of the electorate – is under huge pressure and […]

NSSN 280: Defend the Junior Doctors – Fight Hunt’s imposition!

February 17, 2016 in Bulletins

The NSSN calls on all our supporters and affiliates to continue to give solidarity to the BMA and the junior doctors. Why not offer them the chance to speak at a meeting of your union branch, trades council or NSSN group? We encourage everyone to discuss with the BMA in your area the idea of organising local solidarity activities and protests – some are being organised this Saturday – and link up with unions locally, trades councils and campaigning organisations including the Trade Union Co-ordinating Group of unions (TUCG), Unite the Resistance, People’s Assembly, Campaign for Trade Union Freedom, Keep […]
