NSSN 389: March against the Tories on Saturday’s TUC demo – Newham Academy victory!

May 8, 2018 in Bulletins

The NSSN calls on all our supporters and affiliates to continue to build for this Saturday’s ‘A new deal for working people’ demonstration. We believe that it is an opportunity to provide a platform to launch a movement that can take on this weak and divided Tory government. Unions such as the PCS are using it to step up their fight to break the Tories’ 1% pay cap in the civil service that could see a strike ballot shortly after the union’s conference in two weeks’ time. We’ve already seen this year the CWU and UCU push the employers back […]

NSSN 388: BFAWU members strike back at McDonalds

May 2, 2018 in Bulletins

NSSN supporters actively supported yesterday’s strike by BFAWU members in McDonald’s restaurants in Manchester, Crayford, Cambridge and Watford. The day started with a midnight walkout in Manchester and ended as workers from all four areas converged on Watford, where there were stoppages at two of the town’s sites. The strike rally heard from the strikers themselves and BFAWU General Secretary Ronnie Draper, National President Ian Hodson as well as a number of supporters including Labour MP and former McDonald’s worker Laura Pidcock. Drawing the rally to a close, Ian Hodson reminded everyone to come on the TUC demonstration on […]

There will be events all round the country over the next week or so to mark both of these days. But there are also strikes and protests that bring out the meaning of both IWMD and May Day. Tomorrow Wednesday April 25th, three days before IWMD, the RMT rail union will be marking two years of their struggle against Driver Only Operations, […]

NSSN 386: Victory for trade union rights in West Dunbartonshire

April 17, 2018 in Bulletins

The NSSN sends our congratulations to the trade unions in West Dunbartonshire Council – Unite, Unison, GMB and EIS. This is an article explaining the victory:- The SNP administration in West Dunbartonshire has, this morning, released a statement announcing their decision to reverse the cuts to trade union convenors and union facility time. This climbdown is a victory for the trade unions and local communities. Instead of the proposed cut to two convenors, they say they will now retain the full 3.5. This retreat comes after a mass campaign was mobilised, both in the work place and the local […]

NSSN 384: Support the indefinite Bromley library strike

April 4, 2018 in Bulletins

Staff at all 14 of Bromley’s libraries in Unite started an indefinite strike on Wednesday 28 March over a ‘paltry and insulting’ pay offer. The strike by the 36 workers comes after the breakdown of pay talks between Unite and Greenwich Leisure Ltd (GLL), which runs the library service on behalf of Bromley council. The strike is the latest to hit the controversial Tory-controlled council which has made outsourcing the lynchpin of its polices. Unite regional officer Onay Kasab said: This is the best response to the Tory anti – trade union laws, a 100% yes vote which smashes […]

NSSN 383: Support the Wilmington waste recycling workers – stop the suspensions!

March 27, 2018 in Bulletins

NSSN 383: Support the Wilmington waste recycling workers – stop the suspensions! The suspension of two of the Wilmington waste recycling workers, who are members of Unison after they returned to work following a successful first week on strike is a clear attempt to intimidate the workers into cancelling future strike action.  It has failed. The workers are more determined than ever to defeat the multi-national FCC Company, which despite making millions in profits last year, is not prepared to pay its workers sick pay.  The Wilmington workers are planning to take a further two weeks strike action starting from […]

382: NSSN Conference now July 7 – support June 30 NHS 70th anniversary

March 20, 2018 in Bulletins

The NSSN steering committee has decided to put our annual conference back a week to avoid a clash of dates with a national day of action to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the NHS on June 30th. We will do all we can to build these protests against continuing Tory health cuts. As our supporters and affiliates will be aware, we had to cancel last year’s NSSN Conference because the People’s Assembly called an emergency post-General Election demo that clashed with the NSSN date. We made that decision because we only had a couple of weeks’ notice and put […]

NSSN 380: Celebrate International Women’s Day – organise to fightback!

March 6, 2018 in Bulletins

The NSSN headlines this week’s bulletin by marking and celebrating International Women’s Day (IWD) on March 8th. We have articles by two of our supporters who have a proud record of trade union struggle. Tessa Warrington was until recently a PCS rep and Keishia Taylor is a member of UCU and is currently on strike against the employers’ attacks on the USS pension scheme. For IWD events go to the TUC website or follow #IWD2018 #IWD18 #IWD on twitter “The #MeToo movement has revealed the endemic nature of sexual harassment in Hollywood and the entertainment industry. It has given […]

UCU The National Shop Stewards Network is fully backing University and College Union (UCU) members in 61 universities who are taking strike action to defend their USS pension rights. This Wednesday they will be joined by UCU members at 15 colleges in Further Education, starting action on pay. All this action shows the potential for co-ordinated strikes across the public sector on pay and any attacks on pension rights. Sam Morecroft, one of our supporters in UCU from Sheffield has written this report: “‘University chiefs split as strikes cause chaos!’ read the front page of last Friday’s Times front […]

NSSN 377: Support the strikes & protests in #HeartUnions week

February 13, 2018 in Bulletins

For the 3rd year, the TUC and the unions are using #HeartUnions week to highlight the role that unions can play. Supporters of the NSSN will be taking part in activities around the country, especially on two of the major themes – public sector pay and assisting the BFAWU in organising low-paid workers in McDonalds.   But we also appeal to all our supporters and affiliates to use this week to give support and solidarity to those workers currently taking industrial action. As usual, the NSSN bulletin contains information about many of the disputes taking place around the country. […]
