NSSN 372: BFAWU McDonalds victory plus February 3rd NHS demo

January 8, 2018 in Bulletins

The NSSN sends solidarity and congratulations to one of our affiliated unions the Bakers’, Food & Allied Workers Union (BFAWU) and their members in McDonalds, who have won a famous victory. We supported their historic strike in Crayford and Cambridge on September 4th, the first in the company in the UK and the NSSN has been a longstanding part of the Fast Food Rights/Hungry for Justice campaign that was launched by the Bakers’ union. We believe that the action and the unionisation of often young workers into the union has been central to the award of the pay rise. […]

NSSN 370: Seasons Greetings – keep fighting back in 2018!!

December 18, 2017 in Bulletins

The National Shop Stewards Network sends our greetings and thanks to all our supporters and affiliates in our last weekly bulletin of the year. 2017 was a year of struggle. We’ve seen waves of strike action, too numerous to mention them all. As you will read in this bulletin, this wave continues into the holiday period. These have often been by low-paid workers to defend their living standards as prices rises and pay caps see the biggest drop in workers’ real incomes since the end of the Napoleonic Wars in the early 19th century. We saw the ‘B-strikes’ in the […]

367: Budget: scrap pay cap & Birmingham bins victory!

November 28, 2017 in Bulletins

NSSN 367: After the Budget: fight together to scrap the pay cap plus Birmingham binworkers victory! The Budget shows that left to their own devices, the Tories are looking to maintain the public sector cap that has devastated workers’ living standards. The independent think-tank Resolution Foundation calculates that pay won’t reach 2008 levels until the mid-2020s – half a decade longer than previously estimated. However, this is a weak, divided and crisis-ridden government that must be confronted and can be defeated. The NSSN has saluted the decisive result of the PCS consultative pay ballot and now we welcome the vote […]

NSSN 366: BiFab – Scottish workers’ action secures breakthrough

November 21, 2017 in Bulletins

Workers at the three threatened Burntisland Fabrication – BiFab – yards have won a guarantee that their jobs and wages will be secured, at least until April 2018. Their decisive action over the last week, and those of the GMB and Unite trade unions, has delivered this important breakthrough. Watch the Scottish TUC’s video of the workers’ protest outside the Scottish Parliament. From an article by NSSN supporters in Scotland:- On 12th November, the company said it had no money to pay wages and was giving notice that it intended to enter administration. The threat to 1400 workers who […]

October 26, 2017 in Bulletins

In this week’s bulletin, we headline with the continued action by PCS members against office closures in the Department for Work and Pensions. Also, for the 3rd time, Southern Rail management have put a divisive offer to train drivers in the dispute against Driver Only Operation (DOO). We call on ASLEF members to again reject this offer and open the way to joint action with the RMT, who have now called strikes against DOO in five train operators.   PCS Now PCS members at Plymouth Old Tree Court benefit centre have voted to strike on 6 November in protest at the plans […]

361: Support the CWU & come to NSSN Solidarity Forum

October 18, 2017 in Bulletins

In last week’s NSSN bulletin, we headlined the strike that was due to take place from tomorrow by CWU members in Royal Mail. Disgracefully, a High Court judge has granted an injunction to management, forcing the union to postpone the strike for seven weeks to take part in external moderation. This is despite the CWU smashing the undemocratic voting thresholds in the new Tory Trade Union Act – the first national test of this anti-union law. This ruling has exposed the true meaning of the Tory’s intentions – to attempt to block the right of workers to take industrial […]

We also have an article about Black History Month starting on October 1st in its 30th year, which we encourage our supporters to take part in. We also echo the RMT’s call for all the train companies to be brought back into public ownership. NSSN 355: NSSN TUC Rally this Sunday

September 6, 2017 in Bulletins

NSSN 355: NSSN TUC Rally this Sunday – Fight together for a pay rise! Workers will be looking to the TUC Congress starting this Sunday in Brighton for a lead in taking on the brutal Tory attack on living standards. Real incomes are at 2007 levels and falling every month as price rises outstrip wage increases. Cameron notoriously claimed that we were “all in it together” when he launched his austerity offensive in 2010 but his class of super-rich have got even richer under the Tories while nurses and other workers have to go to foodbanks. But the fightback is […]
