NSSN 336: London NHS workers walk off the job to win!

April 11, 2017 in Bulletins

Too many in the union movement are pointing to the new Tory Trade Union Act with its undemocratic industrial action ballot thresholds to argue that action is now virtually impossible. But it’s clear from the events of last week at the Royal London Hospital, that workers are ready to defend their rights. That was the unmistakable message from the 160 domestic staff who walked off the floor at the hospital which is part of Barts NHS Trust, on 6 April. Their new employer, the privateer vulture contractor Serco, thought it could set the tone for workplace relations by withdrawing […]

NSSN 335: Support 8-day Unite Bromley library strike as ASLEF drivers reject Southern Rail offer again!

April 4, 2017 in Bulletins

Unite members working in Bromley libraries began the first of 8 days of strike action last Saturday. The long running dispute is in defence of the library service from privatisation. The campaign has already seen off the privateers from Carillion and a proposal to replace permanent staff with volunteers. Now Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL) are thought to be the last realistic bidders for the contract – although the Council ludicrously claims that commercial confidentiality means that they cannot disclose the remaining bidders!! GLL claim to be a social enterprise yet act like the worst of private companies, employing three […]

March 16, 2017 in Bulletins

The National Shop Stewards Network (NSSN) is supporting the ‘Marches against Racism’ this Saturday March 18th in London, Edinburgh and Cardiff.   Watch this video of Unison NEC members April Ashley and Hugo Pierre who spoke to the NSSN in a personal capacity on why they will be marching and why workers’ unity against racism and austerity is needed to force back the division whipped up by Trump, UKIP and the Tories. March 18 National Demo: Refugees and Migrants Welcome – Stand Up To Racism, Islamophobia & Anti-Semitism details here on ‘Stand up to Racism’ website London: 12pm, (BBC) […]

331: After massive march, fight together to defend #OurNHS

We mention some in our bulletin but keep up to speed with any IWD events through #IWD and #IWD2017 on twitter   The NSSN salutes the massive #OurNHS demonstration that filled the streets of London last Saturday. It was called by the Health Campaigns Together grassroots campaign. To get a flavour of the march, please look at the following videos, the first from Leicester campaigners who have been fighting to save the Glenfield children […]

The NSSN is supporting this Saturday’s ‘It’s Our NHS!’ national demonstration in London. We have long supported this initiative and have donated to the Health Campaigns Together grassroots campaign. The demo is now supported by a whole number of national unions and health campaigns. We call on all our supporters and affiliates to join the march and help build it. NSSN 329: Rail unions unity needed to stop DOO at Southern Rail

February 21, 2017 in Bulletins

The NSSN salutes members of ASLEF who voted to reject Southern Rail’s offer to end their dispute. We call on the union to join with the RMT, who disgracefully were excluded from talks brokered by the TUC, to plan co-ordinated action to stop management’s Driver Only Operation (DOO) plans. The starting point for this is a commitment not to have separate talks with the company. It is therefore a concern that there are reports that ASLEF and Southern Rail are meeting for secret talks today. We don’t believe that this is the message of the ASLEF ballot last week. […]

NSSN 328: Support BA Mixed Fleet strike!

February 15, 2017 in Bulletins

Low-paid British Airways cabin crew in Unite the Union are due to strike this week from Friday to Monday for another 4 days on top of the 11 days of action they have already taken this year. But instead of negotiating, BA have been trying to intimidate workers on £12,000 a year through removing bonuses and staff travel. The NSSN will continue to give our full support and solidarity and we appeal to all our supporters and affiliates to do so as well. The workers have been using Bedfont & Feltham Football & Social Club as their HQ – […]

NSSN 325: NSSN public meeting this Thursday – “Nationalise Tata to guarantee jobs & pensions”

January 24, 2017 in Bulletins

Last April, the National Shop Stewards Network (NSSN) called a protest in Port Talbot as fears grew about the future of its steelworks. Its owner Tata was looking to break up and sell off much of its UK operations. Over 200 local people demonstrated behind our slogan ‘Nationalise Tata to save the steelworks, jobs and communities.’ It is a welcome fact that almost 10 months ago later, the works remain standing and operating. Whatever the true intention of Tata, it has proved politically impossible to close it, for now at least. Now the workforce has been given the extremely […]

NSSN 324: Trade Union Act to come into force on March 1st – TUC call a special conference

January 18, 2017 in Bulletins

The Tories have confirmed that their anti-union laws, incorporated in the Trade Union Act, including new undemocratic industrial action ballot thresholds will come into force on March 1st. The NSSN calls on the TUC to implement the policy passed at last September’s TUC Congress which was moved by the RMT which includes: “Congress believes the General Council needs to convene an urgent conference of affiliates to provide a practical forum, including workshops, as to how to best coordinate our legal and industrial response to the Act in line with policy already set by Congress.” and an amendment from the […]
