NSSN 386: Victory for trade union rights in West Dunbartonshire

April 17, 2018 in Bulletins

The NSSN sends our congratulations to the trade unions in West Dunbartonshire Council – Unite, Unison, GMB and EIS. This is an article explaining the victory:- The SNP administration in West Dunbartonshire has, this morning, released a statement announcing their decision to reverse the cuts to trade union convenors and union facility time. This climbdown is a victory for the trade unions and local communities. Instead of the proposed cut to two convenors, they say they will now retain the full 3.5. This retreat comes after a mass campaign was mobilised, both in the work place and the local […]

Come to the ‘A new deal for working people’ TUC march and rally in London on Saturday May 12th. It is an opportunity to mobilise hundreds of thousands of trade unionists, their families, friends and service users who are angry at the attacks of the employers and their Tory Government. Some unions such as PCS are urging their members to attend it and use it as a platform to fight against the Tories’ public sector pay rise. Others will be voicing their opposition to Government cuts in the NHS, local government and the rest of the public sector. Railworkers […]

382: NSSN Conference now July 7 – support June 30 NHS 70th anniversary

March 20, 2018 in Bulletins

The NSSN steering committee has decided to put our annual conference back a week to avoid a clash of dates with a national day of action to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the NHS on June 30th. We will do all we can to build these protests against continuing Tory health cuts. As our supporters and affiliates will be aware, we had to cancel last year’s NSSN Conference because the People’s Assembly called an emergency post-General Election demo that clashed with the NSSN date. We made that decision because we only had a couple of weeks’ notice and put […]

NSSN 381: Victory to the lecturers as pension offer is rejected

March 14, 2018 in Bulletins

NSSN 381: Victory to the lecturers as pension offer is rejected The UCU USS pensions dispute in the pre-1992 universities continue as the employer’s proposals were yesterday rejected after a meeting of the union’s Higher Education Committee (HEC) and a national reps meeting. In an incredible show of strength by rank and file lecturers, thousands were mobilised around the country in emergency branch meetings – many virtually unanimously. Hundreds of UCU members, perhaps up to a thousand across the day, converged on UCU HQ to lobby the HEC and reps meeting. Lecturers believe that their 14 days of strike action, […]

February 27, 2018 in Bulletins

UCU The National Shop Stewards Network is fully backing University and College Union (UCU) members in 61 universities who are taking strike action to defend their USS pension rights. This Wednesday they will be joined by UCU members at 15 colleges in Further Education, starting action on pay. All this action shows the potential for co-ordinated strikes across the public sector on pay and any attacks on pension rights. Sam Morecroft, one of our supporters in UCU from Sheffield has written this report: “‘University chiefs split as strikes cause chaos!’ read the front page of last Friday’s Times front […]

NSSN 377: Support the strikes & protests in #HeartUnions week

February 13, 2018 in Bulletins

For the 3rd year, the TUC and the unions are using #HeartUnions week to highlight the role that unions can play. Supporters of the NSSN will be taking part in activities around the country, especially on two of the major themes – public sector pay and assisting the BFAWU in organising low-paid workers in McDonalds.   But we also appeal to all our supporters and affiliates to use this week to give support and solidarity to those workers currently taking industrial action. As usual, the NSSN bulletin contains information about many of the disputes taking place around the country. […]

373: Carillion scandal shows why we need massive Feb 3 demo

January 16, 2018 in Bulletins

The NSSN sends solidarity to Carillion workers after the company went into administration. No worker should lose their job or pension because of mismanagement. Carillion like many others, have benefited from privatisation. But it’s the workers who have paid the price, such as the 200 outsourced employees at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon, who took strike action in 2012 against job losses and pay cuts. We call for all Carillion’s outsourced workers to be taken back in-house in the public sector and employed directly. We also support the demand of Mick Cash, the general secretary of the transport […]

NSSN 372: BFAWU McDonalds victory plus Feb3 NHS demo

January 8, 2018 in Bulletins

The NSSN sends solidarity and congratulations to one of our affiliated unions the Bakers’, Food & Allied Workers Union (BFAWU) and their members in McDonalds, who have won a famous victory. We supported their historic strike in Crayford and Cambridge on September 4th, the first in the company in the UK and the NSSN has been a longstanding part of the Fast Food Rights/Hungry for Justice campaign that was launched by the Bakers’ union. We believe that the action and the unionisation of often young workers into the union has been central to the award of the pay rise. […]

NSSN 370: Seasons Greetings – keep fighting back in 2018!!

December 18, 2017 in Bulletins

The National Shop Stewards Network sends our greetings and thanks to all our supporters and affiliates in our last weekly bulletin of the year. 2017 was a year of struggle. We’ve seen waves of strike action, too numerous to mention them all. As you will read in this bulletin, this wave continues into the holiday period. These have often been by low-paid workers to defend their living standards as prices rises and pay caps see the biggest drop in workers’ real incomes since the end of the Napoleonic Wars in the early 19th century. We saw the ‘B-strikes’ in the […]
