NSSN 325: NSSN public meeting this Thursday – “Nationalise Tata to guarantee jobs & pensions”

January 24, 2017 in Bulletins

Last April, the National Shop Stewards Network (NSSN) called a protest in Port Talbot as fears grew about the future of its steelworks. Its owner Tata was looking to break up and sell off much of its UK operations. Over 200 local people demonstrated behind our slogan ‘Nationalise Tata to save the steelworks, jobs and communities.’ It is a welcome fact that almost 10 months ago later, the works remain standing and operating. Whatever the true intention of Tata, it has proved politically impossible to close it, for now at least. Now the workforce has been given the extremely […]

April 6, 2016 in Bulletins

15,000 steel jobs are on the line but the call to nationalise Tata is growing and the pressure on Cameron is building! Over the last few days, politicians of all parties in Cardiff and London are moving their positions but we have to keep the heat on them. Last Saturday, hundreds came on a ‘Nationalise Tata’ protest and demonstration in Port Talbot called by the National Shop Stewards Network (NSSN) and next Wednesday April 13, the NSSN is hosting a public meeting in the town. On Monday April 4th, NSSN national chair Rob Williams spoke at a lobby of the […]

NSSN 286: Save jobs & communities – #Nationalise Tata steel plants!

March 30, 2016 in Appeals, Bulletins

The National Shop Stewards Network sends our support and solidarity to the thousands of steelworkers, their families and the steel unions who are trying to come to terms with the news that Tata is looking to sell off its UK steel business. This means that what should be a fundamental foundation of the economy and the jobs and communities that go with it are under real threat. We organised a solidarity meeting in Port Talbot last month when Tata announced that nearly 20% of the 4,000 direct jobs in the works were to go. We called for the UK plants […]

NSSN 167: 20th anniversary of rail privatisation

November 7, 2013 in Bulletins

On 5 November 1993 John Major’s Tories passed the Railways Act to privatise British Rail, opening an era of public transport chaos and fragmentation in Britain. Rail privatisation is a grotesque ‘corporate welfare’ binge for a herd of gruesome Fat Cats, some well-known like Richard Branson, others less so like the shadowy hedge funds and banks who trouser ‘rolling stock leasing charges’ for trains already bought and paid for by public investment. This month, on the 20th anniversary, RMT demands an end to rail privatisation – legalised robbery paid for by tax scams and extortionate rail fares. In 2012-13 alone, […]
