284: Education unions must organise against Tory academies plan

March 16, 2016 in Bulletins

Overnight, the Tories have announced plans to put every school in England into academy status. This is an emergency statement from NSSN supporters in the NUT:- The government’s announcement that all schools in England are to become academies is a declaration of war on comprehensive public education and national pay and conditions for teachers and support staff. It exposes the academy project for the wholesale privatisation it is and nothing to do with tailored school improvement. Only last week Ofsted reprimanded seven Multi Academy Trusts for poor performance. The Socialist Party has regularly detailed the higher exclusion rates, poorer employment […]

NSSN 251: Strike Together against Tory anti-union laws

July 15, 2015 in Bulletins

If anyone had any doubts about the power of the organised working-class, the incredible strikes on London Underground and First Great Western by tube and railworkers’ unions last week were a tremendous demonstration of what the unions can do if they take determined action. The NSSN salutes the strikes as well as the co-ordinated Budget Day strikes by workers in the National Gallery, Barnet, Bromley, the protests against victimisation at Sotheby’s and the Youth Against Austerity mobilisations by Youth Fight for Jobs. But it also wasn’t lost on the Tories. They have now outlined their vicious anti-union laws in the […]

NSSN 248: Massive marches against austerity

June 25, 2015 in Bulletins

The streets of London were full of anti-austerity protestors last Saturday on the People’s Assembly demonstration. Thousands more were on other protests, including the STUC event in Glasgow. What a response to the Tories just 43 days after their election victory was confirmed! The National Shop Stewards Network (NSSN) believes that this shows the huge potential to defeat the Tories latest £12billion cuts package that Osborne will announce on the July 8th budget and Cameron’s new anti-union laws. As all striking workers will tell you – unions taking action gets huge support. This is because all those facing the effects […]

NSSN 245: Victories show that action works!

June 3, 2015 in Bulletins

It’s just a month since the Tories won the general election and already workers are demonstrating how they can be stopped in their tracks! In the last week alone:- Education unions in Lewisham were due to take another two days of strike action this week against academisation but the plans have been deferred. Kone workers were going to continue their weekly Monday strikes against management’s attempts to use a tracking system as a disciplinary tool. But they too have won a victory. For the second time, the threat of national strike action by Network Rail workers has forced the bosses […]

NSSN 243: Two weeks after the election…workers strike back!

We are delighted to announce that at theirs, the FBU have voted to affiliate to the NSSN – the 9th national union to officially support the Network. At that conference and others the clear message is that workers are prepared to fight Tory cuts and any new attacks on union rights that are announced in the Queen’s Speech on May 27. That defiant mood is reflected in the incredible number of strikes, […]

230:Victory! Protest wins reinstatement of Crossrail worker

February 17, 2015 in Bulletins

Construction workers were celebrating this morning (Monday February 16) after a worker on the huge London Crossrail project was reinstated after being sacked on Friday for the crime of raising health and safety issues. His employer, Costain, tried to argue that he had been laid off because of lack of work, yet he had only been employed four days earlier on a job that has three years left! These underhand methods are the insecure reality for construction workers and a massive obstacle for trade union members and activists who try to ensure that sites are safe and workers aren’t ripped off […]
