  University pensions strike update: Universities to be hit with 14 strike days if USS row not resolved – from UCU website (22 Jan): Universities face initial 14 days of escalating strike action if a row over changes to the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) is not resolved.   Unite Shocking levels of mental illness and stress revealed problems among Manchester housing workers, as Mears strike action resumes (from Unite website 13 Nov) – A confidential survey of workers employed by Mears in Manchester and joint venture company Manchester Working (operated by Mears) has revealed very high levels of mental health problems and stress among its workforce. The NSSN is supporting the struggle of refuse collectors in Birmingham. This is by one of our local supporters:- Since June 30th, refuse collectors employed by Birmingham City Council and members of Unite the Union have been taking industrial action against the employer’s proposals. They will see a reduction in their staffing numbers by 113 posts (20%), changes in working practices and extending the working week. The government is abandoning unemployed, sick and disabled people, and putting hundreds of jobs at risk, by confirming today the closure of almost one in 10 jobcentres. The news comes as we announce our members in Eastern Avenue jobcentre in Sheffield, one of the threatened sites, will strike again from 17 to 21 July following a week-long walkout in June.
