NSSN 460: Solidarity with the CWU – defend the right to strike!

November 13, 2019 in Bulletins

This week’s NSSN bulletin comes out just after the High Court judgement that has ruled against the CWU and its members in Royal Mail. The NSSN gives our total support and solidarity to the CWU and the postal workers. The NSSN national chair Rob Williams said: “This is an absolute disgrace! The CWU smashed the undemocratic voting thresholds in the Tory anti-union laws – 97% yes vote on a 76% turnout. Yet an establishment judge declares it void, so that an official strike couldn’t take place in the run-up to Christmas, the busiest time of the year for Royal Mail […]

459: Tories out – support Corbyn’s pro-worker programme!

November 5, 2019 in Bulletins

Finally, the general election has been called – for December 12th. As our supporters know, we have been campaigning for the TUC and the unions to mobilise for this – in order to get rid of the Tories. It was the main theme of both our annual conference in July and TUC Rally in September. As with the one two years ago, there is a clear choice in this election. The NSSN is an organisation of rank and file trade unionists. We aren’t affiliated to any political party but Jeremy Corbyn’s pro-workers policies that include the following would be […]

The National Shop Stewards Network is proud to support the co-ordinated strike this Thursday October 4th by restaurant and hospitality workers. Two of our affiliated unions the BFAWU and Unite are prominent in the action, alongside the GMB, IWW and IWGB. We believe that these struggles are giving workers in these sectors confidence to fight back. Workers in the BFAWU in the ‘Ivy House’ pub in South London walked out in solidarity with their sacked workmates last Sunday and are still out. Join the protests outside the pub – 40 Stuart Rd, Nunhead, London SE15 3BE. For up to date […]

May 2, 2018 in Bulletins

NSSN supporters actively supported yesterday’s strike by BFAWU members in McDonald’s restaurants in Manchester, Crayford, Cambridge and Watford. The day started with a midnight walkout in Manchester and ended as workers from all four areas converged on Watford, where there were stoppages at two of the town’s sites. The strike rally heard from the strikers themselves and BFAWU General Secretary Ronnie Draper, National President Ian Hodson as well as a number of supporters including Labour MP and former McDonald’s worker Laura Pidcock. Drawing the rally to a close, Ian Hodson reminded everyone to come on the TUC demonstration on […]

There will be events all round the country over the next week or so to mark both of these days. But there are also strikes and protests that bring out the meaning of both IWMD and May Day. NSSN 386: Victory for trade union rights in West Dunbartonshire

April 17, 2018 in Bulletins

The NSSN sends our congratulations to the trade unions in West Dunbartonshire Council – Unite, Unison, GMB and EIS. This is an article explaining the victory:- The SNP administration in West Dunbartonshire has, this morning, released a statement announcing their decision to reverse the cuts to trade union convenors and union facility time. This climbdown is a victory for the trade unions and local communities. Instead of the proposed cut to two convenors, they say they will now retain the full 3.5. This retreat comes after a mass campaign was mobilised, both in the work place and the local […]

It is an opportunity to mobilise hundreds of thousands of trade unionists, their families, friends and service users who are angry at the attacks of the employers and their Tory Government. Some unions such as PCS are urging their members to attend it and use it as a platform to fight against the Tories’ public sector pay rise. Others will be voicing their opposition to Government cuts in the NHS, local government and the rest of the public sector. Railworkers […]

373: Carillion scandal shows why we need massive Feb 3 demo

January 16, 2018 in Bulletins

The NSSN sends solidarity to Carillion workers after the company went into administration. No worker should lose their job or pension because of mismanagement. Carillion like many others, have benefited from privatisation. But it’s the workers who have paid the price, such as the 200 outsourced employees at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon, who took strike action in 2012 against job losses and pay cuts. We call for all Carillion’s outsourced workers to be taken back in-house in the public sector and employed directly. We also support the demand of Mick Cash, the general secretary of the transport […]
