TU Bill passed but victories show how it can be defeated

May 9, 2016 in Bulletins

The Tory Trade Union Bill has completed its journey through the parliamentary process to become law. Disgracefully, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has not organised a single national demonstration against the bill. It’s one lobby of Parliament last November saw hundreds of union members refused access to the venue in Westminster because the TUC had only booked half the seats, such was their pessimism about how many would turn up! Fortunately, because the FBU had their fire engine outside, I was able to speak to what became an open-air rally. It was the only way the NSSN was going to […]

Next Tuesday and Wednesday, the Junior Doctors in the BMA take their next 48-hour strike against Jeremy Hunt’s imposition of his new contract. Their heroic dispute is at a pivotal stage. At its recent conference, the NUT teachers’ union passed a motion to ballot for strike action against forced academisation and link up with the Junior Doctors. In London on the evening of the […]

NSSN 279: #KillTheBill – Stop Tory Cuts, Defend Unions

February 9, 2016 in Bulletins

The NSSN has produced a new leaflet for the TUC’s #heartunions week of action – this is the text:- Straight after last May’s election, Cameron moved his plans to bring in his (anti) Trade Union Bill at the same time that Osborne set out the next wave of brutal Tory cuts. Now as the Bill makes its way through both houses of Parliament, councils are setting new cuts budgets while a new cull of civil service office closures, privatisations and redundancies are announced. This is not accidental. The Tories fully understand that the unions with 6million members are potentially the […]

November 11, 2015 in Protest, Uncategorized, Video

As expected, the Tory Trade Union Bill passed its 3rd reading last night November 10th. It now goes to the Lords. But we must keep up the pressure and prepare for resisting it of it becomes law. A rally organised by the Trade Union Coordinating Group (TUCG) made it clear this attack on trade union rights would not pass without resistance. The rally was addressed by John McDonnell, Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer who warned the Bill was “an existential threat to the trade union movement”   Pledging further resistence even if the Bill becomes law, John McInally, Vice President of […]

NSSN 267: Protest the 3rd reading of the Trade Union Bill Nov 10

November 3, 2015 in Bulletins

Thousands of trade unionists came to London yesterday to lobby their MPs as part of the TUC rally against the Trade Union Bill. Many couldn’t get into the event at Westminster Central Hall but the FBU saved the day by bringing their fire engine round to the front of the venue for the rally speakers to address the crowd. NSSN national chair Rob Williams also spoke from the FBU platform, calling on everyone to come back to London on November 10th when the Bill gets its 3rd and final House of Commons reading before it goes to the Lords. Rob […]

NSSN 262: #KillTheBill Demo outside Tory Party conference

September 30, 2015 in Bulletins

Text from NSSN leaflet that will be given out on Sunday’s TUC demonstration in Manchester:- As new Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has said, the Tories have declared war on trade unions and their members. After being the 200-1 outsider, surely no-one now believes the odds are too great to take on Cameron and co? Their Trade Union Bill is a continuation of Thatcher’s brutal anti-union laws. Despite the propaganda that says unions are finished, this Bill shows that the Tories recognise that with over 6million members, they are still potentially the most powerful barrier to Osborne’s cuts. That’s why it’s […]
