September 14, 2016 in Bulletins, Video

Sunday’s NSSN rally before the start of TUC Congress in Brighton was a fantastic success. Militant trade unionists from both the leadership of some of the most fighting unions and the rank and file spoke to 250 Congress delegates and union and anti-cuts campaigners. Everyone sent their best wishes to PCS General Secretary Mark Serwotka who was admitted to hospital last week. There were barnstorming speeches from PCS President Janice Godrich, RMT General Secretary Mick Cash, BFAWU General Secretary Ronnie Draper (suspended and now reinstated by Labour) and POA General Secretary Steve Gillan alongside those off junior doctors and workers from Greenwich […]

BMA Junior Doctors re-start strikes September 12-16 The BMA has today confirmed that junior doctors will take further industrial action. The first 5 days will be September 12-16. We know that trade unionists and the majority of ordinary people everywhere will support this action as they did earlier in the year.   These dates happen to be the week of TUC Congress, taking place this year in Brighton. The NSSN calls on the TUC to invite the BMA to send a speaker to address Congress and to go further. This is happening at the same time that draft plans from […]

TU Bill passed but victories show how it can be defeated

May 9, 2016 in Bulletins

The Tory Trade Union Bill has completed its journey through the parliamentary process to become law. Disgracefully, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has not organised a single national demonstration against the bill. It’s one lobby of Parliament last November saw hundreds of union members refused access to the venue in Westminster because the TUC had only booked half the seats, such was their pessimism about how many would turn up! Fortunately, because the FBU had their fire engine outside, I was able to speak to what became an open-air rally. It was the only way the NSSN was going to […]

90 years since the General Strike

May 4, 2016 in Bulletins

Ninety years ago today, millions of workers were taking part in the General Strike to defend the miners from a brutal Tory government. The NSSN along with militant unions has championed the idea of generalised strike action to face down Tory austerity and their planned anti-union laws. PCS National Vice-President John McInally celebrates the 1926 General Strike and draws out the lessons for today’s generation of trade union fighters:- “The 90th anniversary of the general strike of 1926 allows us to reflect on the potential of the working class through their own organisations – the trade unions – to organise […]

Junior Doctors are striking and teachers are balloting against forced academies while steelworkers are increasingly calling for Tata to be nationalised. 10th annual National Shop Stewards Network (NSSN) conference – Saturday July 2nd in Conway Hall, 25 Red Lion Square, London WC1R 4RL – 11am-4.30pm. Yorkshire NSSN: union reps & members share experiences

March 8, 2016 in News

The fourth annual conference of the Yorkshire Shop Stewards Network was held in Leeds on Saturday 5th March, attended by representatives from ten different trade unions from across the region. Opening the “Stop the Union Busters” morning session, Andy Budds (RMT transport union executive member) said it was no accident that it had been the Tory transport minister who first announced the (anti) Trade Union Bill because the government wants to break the RMT. Recalling that his union’s former general secretary, the late Bob Crow, had been accused of being a ‘dinosaur’, Andy asked “who’s the real dinosaurs?” when the […]
