Royal Mail workers in the Communication Workers Union (CWU) union, part of the Eastern 6 Branch, won a tremendous victory last week in Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, despite the new Tory trade Union Act. A CWU member sent in the following report:- “Royal Mail had suspended two representatives for allegedly claiming unauthorised overtime. CWU members took unofficial industrial action across 9 Royal Mail offices on Monday. CWU general secretary, Dave Ward, tweeted “Offices across MK/LU postcode have walked out this morning in support of @CWUnews reps under attack. Solidarity and full support #TheCWU”. NSSN 339: Support Jeremy Corbyn’s “Workers’ Charter”

May 3, 2017 in Bulletins

Workers will welcome Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnell’s 20-point “workers’ charter” to fix the “rigged economy” in work. If it is enthusiastically campaigned for by taking it into workplaces, alongside policies such as re-nationalisation of the railways and Royal Mail, it could really inspire workers to vote to put Jeremy into government and ditch the Tories. Restoring, defending and strengthening trade union rights as the most effective way to fight for more secure employment and better wages is a major theme of the programme. The commitment to repeal the Trade Union Act would be a major step forward although it […]

April 19, 2017 in Bulletins

This week sees another dispute flaring into action over employers closing final salary/defined benefits pension schemes as BMW car workers start five weeks of strike action at Oxford, Swindon, Hams Hall near Birmingham and Goodwood. Workers at the Atomic Weapons Establishment will have taken 16 days of strikes after voting by 80% in a re-ballot to continue and escalate the action with 8 further days of action into May. The long-running Fujitsu dispute  is also about pension cuts in addition to redundancies. Recently, Tata steelworkers reluctantly voted to accept the closure of their scheme because of the threat of plant […]

August 23, 2016 in Bulletins

The National Shop Stewards Network (NSSN) is delighted to announce that Labour Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell has agreed to speak at our rally on Sunday 11 September, before the start of TUC Congress in Brighton. The NSSN gives full support to Jeremy and John McDonnell. Like tens of thousands of working class people who have joined solidarity #KeepCorbyn protests and meetings over the summer, we see Owen Smith’s challenge as an attempt by the Blairites to turn the political clock back to when Labour was a reliable tool of the establishment. We hope that the NSSN rally, with John McDonnell […]

The Economist referred to the referendum result as “an outpouring of fury against the establishment” and there was plenty of this fury in the hall, from bakery workers dismissed and bullied to teachers preparing a national strike. The wonderful message of hope brought by Yann Venier, secretary of the CGT trade union […]

The 10th annual NSSN Conference takes place this Saturday July 2nd in Conway Hall in London in the aftermath of the EU Referendum that has precipitated a political crisis for the Tories.
