NSSN 300: NSSN Conference – “Now is the time to ramp things up”

July 7, 2016 in Bulletins

The sound of establishment figures crashing out of office provided the backdrop to the 10th annual National Shop Stewards Network conference. “In all the tumult, let’s not forget that this week we saw the downfall of a Tory prime minister” said PCS president Janice Godrich to huge applause. The Economist referred to the referendum result as “an outpouring of fury against the establishment” and there was plenty of this fury in the hall, from bakery workers dismissed and bullied to teachers preparing a national strike. The wonderful message of hope brought by Yann Venier, secretary of the CGT trade union […]

NSSN 299: This Saturday July 2! NSSN Conference 2016 – get ALL the Tories OUT! The 10th annual NSSN Conference takes place this Saturday July 2nd in Conway Hall in London in the aftermath of the EU Referendum that has precipitated a political crisis for the Tories. Cameron, the architect of the biggest austerity offensive unleashed on working-class people for 90 years is history and his party is split down the middle. Now we need to get rid of the rest of the Tories! Yet incredibly, this has been the signal for Blairite Labour MPs to try and stage a […]

April 27, 2016 in Bulletins

On April 26th in London, over 5,000 striking junior doctors and their supporters marched on the first day of their latest 2-day strike. The march was joint between the BMA and the NUT, who are balloting over forced academisation along with members of other supporting unions including PCS, FBU, RMT, Unite, Unison, NAPO, POA, GMB, TSSA and many others. The whole of the PCS National Executive (NEC) left their meeting to attend. The union’s General Secretary Mark Serwotka addressed the huge rally to announce that the NEC had passed a motion calling on the TUC General Council to organise a […]

284: Education unions must organise against Tory academies plan

March 16, 2016 in Bulletins

Overnight, the Tories have announced plans to put every school in England into academy status. This is an emergency statement from NSSN supporters in the NUT:- The government’s announcement that all schools in England are to become academies is a declaration of war on comprehensive public education and national pay and conditions for teachers and support staff. It exposes the academy project for the wholesale privatisation it is and nothing to do with tailored school improvement. Only last week Ofsted reprimanded seven Multi Academy Trusts for poor performance. The Socialist Party has regularly detailed the higher exclusion rates, poorer employment […]

March 9, 2016 in Bulletins

Thousands of people from across the country will march on Parliament to oppose the Government’s Housing and Planning Bill and demand: secure homes for all, rent controls, and homes for people not for profit. The Bill, which is currently in the House of Lords, threatens to make the UK’s housing crisis much worse, send rent and house prices soaring and spells the end of council and social housing. Jeremy Corbyn will join the marchers. Assemble 12noon – Sunday 13 March at Lincoln’s Inn, Newman’s Row, London WC2A 3T London Last year alone the number of rough sleepers in the UK […]

NSSN 279: #KillTheBill – Stop Tory Cuts, Defend Unions

February 9, 2016 in Bulletins

The NSSN has produced a new leaflet for the TUC’s #heartunions week of action – this is the text:- Straight after last May’s election, Cameron moved his plans to bring in his (anti) Trade Union Bill at the same time that Osborne set out the next wave of brutal Tory cuts. Now as the Bill makes its way through both houses of Parliament, councils are setting new cuts budgets while a new cull of civil service office closures, privatisations and redundancies are announced. This is not accidental. The Tories fully understand that the unions with 6million members are potentially the […]

NSSN 276: No closures – nationalise to #SaveOurSteel

January 20, 2016 in Bulletins

The crisis in the UK Steel Industry is continuing with another 1050 jobs threatened at Tata, with 750 to go at the biggest plant Port Talbot. Just today (Jan 20) Sheffield Forgemasters have announced 100 workers will be made redundant. The NSSN gives full support to the workers in the industry and their unions. We support the call that many steelworkers are making – why can’t they be bailed out like the bankers who caused the economic crisis were in 2008? If Northern Rock and Lloyds TSB could be taken into public ownership, why can’t Port Talbot steelworks or any […]

NSSN 275: Junior Doctors strike back against Tory attacks!

January 13, 2016 in Bulletins

NSSN 275: Junior Doctors strike back against Tory attacks! The NSSN has been proud to give solidarity and support to the BMA and the Junior Doctors as they took their first strike action for four decades on January 12th. Despite all the dirty tactics from the Tories and their anti-union press, the action was a tremendous show of strength that had overwhelming public support – the BMA report record membership and an ITV poll at the end of the day showed over 93% support! Everywhere, there was fantastic solidarity from trade unionists. Banners and flags from all unions graced picket […]

NSSN 273: Seasons greetings from NSSN…#KillTheBill in 2016!

December 16, 2015 in Bulletins

NSSN 273: Seasons greetings from the NSSN…#KillTheBill in 2016! This is the last NSSN e-bulletin of the year…and what a year! The Tories squeaked into government with only 24% of the electorate but consider it enough of a mandate to push through the biggest attack on union rights for over 30 years as well yet more brutal cuts. As we’ve said, the two are inter-linked – Cameron sees the unions as potentially the biggest barrier to more austerity. The NSSN has worked with others, such as the militant unions in the Trade Union Co-ordinating Group (TUCG) and will continue to […]
