October 2, 2018 in Bulletins

The National Shop Stewards Network is proud to support the co-ordinated strike this Thursday October 4th by restaurant and hospitality workers. Two of our affiliated unions the BFAWU and Unite are prominent in the action, alongside the GMB, IWW and IWGB. We believe that these struggles are giving workers in these sectors confidence to fight back. Workers in the BFAWU in the ‘Ivy House’ pub in South London walked out in solidarity with their sacked workmates last Sunday and are still out. Join the protests outside the pub – 40 Stuart Rd, Nunhead, London SE15 3BE. For up to date […]

BFAWU statement on McDonalds pay rise victory

January 4, 2018 in News

The NSSN sends solidarity and congratulations to one of our affiliated unions the Bakers’, Food & Allied Workers Union (BFAWU) and their members in McDonalds, who have won a famous victory. We supported their historic strike in Crayford and Cambridge on September 4th, the first in the company in the UK and the NSSN has been a longstanding part of the Fast Food Rights/Hungry for Justice campaign that was launched by the Bakers’ union. We believe that the action and the unionisation of often young workers into the union has been central to the award of the pay rise. (See […]

Work in Fast Food? Join the BFAWU – £10Now!

August 7, 2015 in Appeals

Dear Comrades   Fast food Workers in the united states are registering  victory after victory. The fight for $15 and a union is winning increases in minimum wage in cities across the states. Some of the most oppressed working class people in America are driving the political agenda of the Presidential election and forcing the likes of Hillary Clinton and Barak Obama to make statements in support of their cause and in support of unions in general.   Workers in the US started in the same position as workers in the UK with small numbers of fast food workers engaged […]

230:Victory! Protest wins reinstatement of Crossrail worker

February 17, 2015 in Bulletins

Construction workers were celebrating this morning (Monday February 16) after a worker on the huge London Crossrail project was reinstated after being sacked on Friday for the crime of raising health and safety issues. His employer, Costain, tried to argue that he had been laid off because of lack of work, yet he had only been employed four days earlier on a job that has three years left! These underhand methods are the insecure reality for construction workers and a massive obstacle for trade union members and activists who try to ensure that sites are safe and workers aren’t ripped off […]

A New Year’s message from BFAWU President Ian Hodson

December 31, 2014 in News

As 2014 nears its end, we can take heart in the fact that God willing, we may only have to endure another five months or so of this nasty, vindictive and rotten government. During his time in office, the Prime Minister, David Cameron has dusted off all the old World War quotes and rolled out the barrel of ‘digging in for victory’ rhetoric. He even went as far to say that the UK “is in the economic equivalent of war today” – and therefore, the spirit of World War II must be recreated in Whitehall. If he’s talking about people […]
