NSSN 372: BFAWU McDonalds victory plus Feb3 NHS demo

January 8, 2018 in Bulletins

The NSSN sends solidarity and congratulations to one of our affiliated unions the Bakers’, Food & Allied Workers Union (BFAWU) and their members in McDonalds, who have won a famous victory. We supported their historic strike in Crayford and Cambridge on September 4th, the first in the company in the UK and the NSSN has been a longstanding part of the Fast Food Rights/Hungry for Justice campaign that was launched by the Bakers’ union. We believe that the action and the unionisation of often young workers into the union has been central to the award of the pay rise. […]

NSSN 370: Seasons Greetings – keep fighting back in 2018!!

December 18, 2017 in Bulletins

The National Shop Stewards Network sends our greetings and thanks to all our supporters and affiliates in our last weekly bulletin of the year. 2017 was a year of struggle. We’ve seen waves of strike action, too numerous to mention them all. As you will read in this bulletin, this wave continues into the holiday period. These have often been by low-paid workers to defend their living standards as prices rises and pay caps see the biggest drop in workers’ real incomes since the end of the Napoleonic Wars in the early 19th century. We saw the ‘B-strikes’ in the […]

367: Budget: scrap pay cap & Birmingham bins victory!

November 28, 2017 in Bulletins

NSSN 367: After the Budget: fight together to scrap the pay cap plus Birmingham binworkers victory! The Budget shows that left to their own devices, the Tories are looking to maintain the public sector cap that has devastated workers’ living standards. The independent think-tank Resolution Foundation calculates that pay won’t reach 2008 levels until the mid-2020s – half a decade longer than previously estimated. However, this is a weak, divided and crisis-ridden government that must be confronted and can be defeated. The NSSN has saluted the decisive result of the PCS consultative pay ballot and now we welcome the vote […]

NSSN 364: PCS members vote YES in pay ballot!

November 8, 2017 in Bulletins

PCS members vote overwhelmingly to back campaign of action on pay (7 Nov) – A decisive yes vote by tens of thousands of PCS members in our consultative ballot on pay sends a powerful message to the government to act to scrap the 1% public sector pay cap and fund above inflation pay rises. The ballot, run by the independent Electoral Reform Services, consisted of 2 questions: Do you agree that the pay cap should be scrapped; and that funds should be made available to provide you with an above inflation pay rise? If the government refuse to scrap […]

July 26, 2017 in Bulletins

NSSN 349: Support the strikes, stop the union attacks, celebrate the victories! This week’s NSSN bulletin opens with some long-running disputes by Unite, PCS and RMT members. We also include another attack on the POA and a fight in Northern Ireland against an attack on NIPSA, including two of its prominent members. We appeal for solidarity for all these struggles. But to show that it’s possible to win significant victories, we include the successful legal action by PCS against the Government imposition of new inferior redundancy terms in the civil service and Unison’s defeat of their employment tribunal fees. Low […]

NSSN 348: Support PCS fight against DWP office closures

July 12, 2017 in Bulletins

The government is abandoning unemployed, sick and disabled people, and putting hundreds of jobs at risk, by confirming today the closure of almost one in 10 jobcentres. The news comes as we announce our members in Eastern Avenue jobcentre in Sheffield, one of the threatened sites, will strike again from 17 to 21 July following a week-long walkout in June. The Department for Work and Pensions has announced just six of the original 78 jobcentres earmarked for closure will remain open, and only 11 of the 80 planned to co-locate with local authorities have been given a reprieve – and […]

347: Support the strikes at Barts NHS Trust, Mixed Fleet and Mears

July 4, 2017 in Bulletins

As unions start to discuss what action can be taken against this weak and divided Tory Government, three important disputes either start this week or move up a gear. Today, the day before the NHS turns 69, workers at Barts Trust in London employed by Serco started action with huge picket lines and a buoyant protest. Manchester maintenance workers have escalated their dispute to all out action. And Mixed Fleet cabin crew in British Airways have resumed their action after management refused to lift sanctions on striking workers. The NSSN supports all these disputes and have been on the […]
