Ex-Visteon/Ford workers march for pensions justice

Former employees of Visteon/Ford marched today from Unite HQ in Holborn to Parliament to demand pensions justice. The workers were robbed of their pensions when Visteon went bust in 2009. Since then the Visteon Pensions Justice Action Group have campaigned tirelessly for the parent company, Ford, to live up to it’s obligations to the workers. The march was a success with hundreds gathering from former plants in Swansea, Belfast, Enfield and Basildon. Fight the Ford Closure

Ford’s closure plans have angered workers in East London. Workers from Ford’s Dagenham Stamping & Tooling Operations plant finished their night shift and descended on Ford’s UK headquarters as Unite convenors from around the country met management on 18 April for a Ford National Joint Negotiating Committee (FNJNC). A consultative ballot for strike action gained an 81% yes vote from the Unite tool makers at the plant, since Fords announced the closure of the plant and a strike ballot is now proceeding. News of Ford’s plans to close the Transit plant in Southampton has hit workers and the city like a bombshell. 500 Ford workers’ and 450 contractors’ jobs are under threat. But the shockwaves of closure will rumble far further. 81 suppliers provide components and materials to Southampton. After 700 jobs were cut in 2008, these redundancies will suck millions of pounds out of the local economy, leaving unemployment and increasing poverty in their wake.
