NSSN 377: Support the strikes & protests in #HeartUnions week

February 13, 2018 in Bulletins

For the 3rd year, the TUC and the unions are using #HeartUnions week to highlight the role that unions can play. Supporters of the NSSN will be taking part in activities around the country, especially on two of the major themes – public sector pay and assisting the BFAWU in organising low-paid workers in McDonalds.   But we also appeal to all our supporters and affiliates to use this week to give support and solidarity to those workers currently taking industrial action. As usual, the NSSN bulletin contains information about many of the disputes taking place around the country. […]

NSSN 370: Seasons Greetings – keep fighting back in 2018!!

December 18, 2017 in Bulletins

The National Shop Stewards Network sends our greetings and thanks to all our supporters and affiliates in our last weekly bulletin of the year. 2017 was a year of struggle. We’ve seen waves of strike action, too numerous to mention them all. As you will read in this bulletin, this wave continues into the holiday period. These have often been by low-paid workers to defend their living standards as prices rises and pay caps see the biggest drop in workers’ real incomes since the end of the Napoleonic Wars in the early 19th century. We saw the ‘B-strikes’ in the […]

Interview with sacked Crossrail worker

March 24, 2015 in News

Crossrail electrician and Unite the Union member Dan Collins was laid off by contractor Skanska after he raised a safety concern.   “I started work on Monday 9 February. They told me it was a three-year contract. A foreman showed me around – there was an abundance of work to do. He asked me if I didn’t mind working 12-hour days or weekends. On the Wednesday I noticed 16-inch wide boards lying across a metre-high elevated steel section, over which Labourers were carrying materials in and out of the area. The boards weren’t fixed down. Someone could slip off the board, […]

NSSN 235: Reinstate sacked Crossrail workers & defend anti-blacklist campaigner

March 24, 2015 in Bulletins

Blacklist Support Group secretary Dave Smith was arrested on the peaceful protest of 40 construction workers and their supporters outside the Construction News Awards in the Hilton Hotel in Park Lane last Wednesday evening. The protestors, who had a token stopping of the traffic, were highlighting the disgraceful sacking of workers on the Crossrail project for raising health and safety concerns. For example, this happened at Whitechapel where workers were ‘let go’ because they wanted torches attached to their helmets, yet days later 13 workers had falls because it was too dark! After a protest there on February 23rd there […]

Stop the Crossrail sackings!

March 3, 2015 in News

For the third Monday in succession, construction workers and their supporters held a protest outside a Crossrail site to demand that a worker sacked for raising safety issues be reinstated. Two weeks ago, protesters blocked the road outside the Bond Street site in London after an electrician was sacked after he had asked for a proper walkway with hand rails. During that protest, we got word that he had been out on fully paid ‘gardening leave’ while his union Unite waited for a meeting to discuss what job he would be put on http://shopstewards.net/2015/02/nssn-230-victory-protest-wins-reinstatement-of-crossrail-worker/ His ’employer’, an agency that is subcontracting […]
