Picketing reinstates sacked construction rep

Ranks and file construction workers from the Blacklist Support Group and their supporters descended on the Canary Wharf HQ of Morgan Stanley this morning to protest the sacking of Unite rep Graham Boxall. The building is undergoing work by the electrical contractor Phoenix, a signatory to bargaining body the Joint Industry Board (JIB). However Phoenix are breaking national collective agreements. The firm had employed electricians through sub-contractor D&D, but JIB rules state that workers seeking to move onto direct employment and pay as you earn taxation have a right to do so. Crane drivers tell HTC “It’s time to pay up!”

Hundreds of crane drivers from the UCATT construction union picketed building sites in London and around the country this morning in a dispute over pay with HTC Plant Limited. Workers had voted 94% in favour of strike action and 94.6% in favour of industrial action short of strike action. The turnout was in excess of 80%. There was a mass picket outside the Nova Square site in Victoria which saw concrete drivers refusing to cross picket lines. Unofficial walkout at Runcorn beats management

Report filed from a Runcorn TPS worker There was an unofficial walkout by construction workers at Runcorn thermal power station on Thursday in another dispute over safety issues on the site. During the storms on Wednesday a section of cladding from a flue stack blew off on the neighbouring Inios Chlor plant and the site was evacuated. On return to work on Thursday some workers refused to go onto the site due to concerns over site safety despite assurances from the Keppel Segers (K.S.), the company in overall charge on the site, that the site was safe for work.
