NSSN 295: Bakers Union strikes back in Yorkshire & Wales!

June 1, 2016 in Bulletins

On April 1st, the NSSN alongside other campaigning organisations, took part in a Fast Food Rights/Hungry for Justice protest alongside the BFAWU Bakers Union outside Downing Street. It was to protest at the Government’s new ‘Gimmick’ National Living Wage. The Tories tried to portray it as a real breakthrough for the low-paid but BFAWU President Ian Hodson attacked the hypocrisy of a ‘minimum wage’ that didn’t apply to workers under the age of 25. But he also warned that unscrupulous employers would try to make their workers pay for the rise by cutting shift allowances and other premiums. This week, […]

NSSN 221: Fight Osborne’s never-ending austerity!

December 3, 2014 in Bulletins

You couldn’t make it up…Osborne reveals a budget that means another £35-50billion worth of cuts to be unloaded on public sector workers and working-class communities just as Starbucks admit that it will be another 3 years until they pay ‘normal’ levels of tax! The ConDem’s Autumn Statement confirms that if he gets his way, the catastrophe we’ve faced over the last four years is the new normal. Some government departments will have had their budgets cut by 80% since the Coalition sneaked into power. In real terms, this means continuing vicious cuts to jobs, living standards and services. But as […]

Our general secretary Mark Serwotka has written to HMRC chief executive Lin Homer to say we believe it signals a “major and damaging change in industrial relations” and to call on her to publicly disown it… continued here Letter from Mark Serwotka […]

201: NSSN rally at TUC Congress:‘Confirm the next pay strikes!’

July 16, 2014 in Bulletins

The tremendous #J10 public sector strike last Thursday has changed the mood music. All of a sudden it is the government desperately re-arranging the deck chairs on its Titanic with its latest re-shuffle. As the NSSN predicted, if the unions give workers a lead, they will respond. Not only that, the action was overwhelmingly popular as all those who have suffered from these cruel cuts were delighted to support someone standing up for them. This is particularly the case as Labour shamefully refused to support the strike. But it was clear on July 10 that workers realise that to win, […]

Ginger Jentzen from Seattle $15WON to speak at NSSN 2014!

June 11, 2014 in Bulletins

The NSSN is delighted to announce that a Ginger Jentzen from the victorious $15Now campaign that has lifted the minimum wage to $15 per hour in Seattle will address the NSSN annual conference on July 5th. Undoubtedly, the election last year of Kshama Sawant of Socialist Alternative as city councillor played a crucial role in this victory alongside an incredible mass campaign. It is an inspiration to all low-paid workers all over the USA and internationally. The NSSN secretary Linda Taaffe attended the enthusiastic and vibrant 15NOW Conference in Seattle in […]

NSSN 193: Care UK workers say “Enough is enough!”

May 20, 2014 in Bulletins

Mags Cowling’s speech to Doncaster Care UK strikers demo on Saturday 17 May “Hi, my name is Mags Cowling and I am a Doncaster Care UK striker (and newly elected Unison shop steward). We were previously employed by the NHS until last year when we were put out for tender and handed to a company called Care UK. If the tender had been won on the level of care the NHS would have won hands down. But it was with great sadness that we were turned over in September 2013, to a company who say they needed to make cuts […]
