346: March together Saturday: fight together to get Tories out!

June 27, 2017 in Bulletins

The General Election result has shocked the Tories and the media but it has confirmed that we’ve had enough of brutal cuts. Jeremy Corbyn’s manifesto gave workers the opportunity to express their anger. On the massive March 26th 2011 TUC demonstration, up to 750,000 trade unionists and anti-cuts campaigners marched against Cameron’s austerity plans. The NSSN produced a flyer that day that warned “This is the fight of our lives…literally.” The tragedy of Grenfell has laid bare the effects of cut-backs, privatisation and de-regulation that the Tories call ‘red-tape’ but actually protect lives. The likes of Boris Johnson praise emergency […]

NSSN 344: Tories Out! Corbyn In! Vote against austerity

June 6, 2017 in Bulletins

This week’s NSSN bulletin comes out just days before one of the most crucial general elections for generations. The National Shop Stewards Network is primarily a rank and file network for trade unionists and anti-cuts campaigners and we are not affiliated to any political party. But in this election, there is a clear choice. Jeremy Corbyn is standing on a programme that if elected to be Prime Minister, would be a massive blow against 7 years of Tory austerity and attacks on jobs and living standards. It is estimated that on average workers’ incomes could be lower in 2021 […]

NSSN 327: Support RMT on Southern Rail!

February 8, 2017 in Bulletins

The transport union RMT, its members, and many across the union movement are fuming at the proposed Southern Rail ‘deal’. It was made with the leadership of the Aslef transport union and presided over by the TUC – they and the Tories hope it will settle the Southern Rail dispute. We don’t believe that this is reflected on the ASLEF picket lines, where members have expressed real solidarity with RMT guards and station staff, who have taken 28 days of strike action. We call on Aslef members to reject this offer and call more coordinated strikes with the RMT. […]

322: Come on national “It’s Our NHS” demo in London March 4

The Health Campaigns Together grassroots campaign has called a national demonstration in London on Saturday March 4th https://www.facebook.com/events/1771664639725061/ Unions such as Unite and PCS have responded positively to an appeal from Health Campaigns Together to health unions, local and national campaigns seeking support for the march. Other unions are due to discuss it. The letter, signed by Mike Forster of Hands off HRI campaign in Huddersfield and Dr Louise Irvine of the Save Lewisham Hospital Campaign states: “The NHS crisis will intensify this winter and there will be no let-up […]

NSSN 306: Junior Doctors, UberEats & Southern Rail strikes

August 31, 2016 in Bulletins

BMA Junior Doctors re-start strikes September 12-16 The BMA has today confirmed that junior doctors will take further industrial action. The first 5 days will be September 12-16. We know that trade unionists and the majority of ordinary people everywhere will support this action as they did earlier in the year.   These dates happen to be the week of TUC Congress, taking place this year in Brighton. The NSSN calls on the TUC to invite the BMA to send a speaker to address Congress and to go further. This is happening at the same time that draft plans from […]

NSSN 298: French striker confirmed for NSSN Conference July 2nd

June 22, 2016 in Bulletins

Trade union activists in the UK have been following the incredible events in France over the last couple of months – although mainly on social media as there has been a virtual blackout by the mainstream broadcasters. They clearly don’t want workers here to be inspired by the mass strikes and demonstrations against the government’s new labour law. The NSSN is delighted to announce that we are able to continue a growing tradition of rounding off our annual conference with an international speaker. Two years ago, Ginger Jentzen from the $15Now struggle in the USA spoke and last year delegates […]

NSSN 295: Bakers Union strikes back in Yorkshire & Wales!

June 1, 2016 in Bulletins

On April 1st, the NSSN alongside other campaigning organisations, took part in a Fast Food Rights/Hungry for Justice protest alongside the BFAWU Bakers Union outside Downing Street. It was to protest at the Government’s new ‘Gimmick’ National Living Wage. The Tories tried to portray it as a real breakthrough for the low-paid but BFAWU President Ian Hodson attacked the hypocrisy of a ‘minimum wage’ that didn’t apply to workers under the age of 25. But he also warned that unscrupulous employers would try to make their workers pay for the rise by cutting shift allowances and other premiums. This week, […]

NSSN 221: Fight Osborne’s never-ending austerity!

December 3, 2014 in Bulletins

You couldn’t make it up…Osborne reveals a budget that means another £35-50billion worth of cuts to be unloaded on public sector workers and working-class communities just as Starbucks admit that it will be another 3 years until they pay ‘normal’ levels of tax! The ConDem’s Autumn Statement confirms that if he gets his way, the catastrophe we’ve faced over the last four years is the new normal. Some government departments will have had their budgets cut by 80% since the Coalition sneaked into power. In real terms, this means continuing vicious cuts to jobs, living standards and services. But as […]
