NSSN Bulletin No. 95

15 June Less than a week ago we held our 6th annual conference, and although we intended to give over this bulletin to the report and guide to action, the pace of events is such that we also need to continue our usual listings.

Firstly though, a HUGE THANK YOU to all those who attended conference, brought fellow trade unionists and activists and helped build & create an inspiring and insightful conference. A full report on the conference by Linda Taaffe the NSSN national secretary: http://bit.ly/LlF7J2

Some of the VIDEOS that were shown at conference:

NSSN GUIDE TO ACTION (with a few more practical additions)

a) We encourage supporters to concentrate on organising local and regional

NSSN Networks with events and meetings to help rank and file activists to build up reliable support networks.

b) We welcome the TUC national demonstration on October 20th and we will

do everything we can to make this day a successful start to the next phase of an action-based campaign against austerity.

c) We advocate that the next step should be for the TUC to organise a

one-day general strike, which includes both public and private sectors, against all cuts to pensions and wages, jobs, services, and housing; to stop privatisations of NHS, education and public services; and to stop the slavery of workfare. To this end we call on trade unionists, campaigners, youth and pensioners to come to Brighton in TUC week to lobby delegates to press for a national strike, to hold an NSSN fringe meeting to highlight this demand.

d) We would encourage all supporters to set up a standing order of £2 or

£1 a month to the NSSN. We seriously need money to continue producing and distributing material. The NHS special bulletin we made for conference was snapped up and we need to do a re-print already!

e) Please also share this bulletin as far as you can and share information

from us and with us via twitter and Facebook. As ever, we welcome your contributions to make this bulletin relevant. [email protected]

Our apologies that we had to cut short speakers from several key disputes and international struggles such as that of the Kazakhstan workers and limit time from the floor for speakers. So much is going on!

We are also aware that this year, we did not have workshop sessions, as it would have cost another £1600 at Friends Meeting House for space hire. We hope to change that next year so that more people can participate. Feel free to send any feedback to us, and thank you again!

UPDATES:

The NSSN has been assisting Unite in fighting the threatened closure of refining operations at Coryton refinery. Shell would like to buy it but only as a terminal. This depot serves much of London and the South-East of England and over 800 jobs are at stake. The government has announced there will be no state aid for Coryton despite protests that took place in London on 14 June. Up to 200 Coryton workers marched from Waterloo to the Department of Energy and Climate Change in Whitehall and then to the Shell HQ at Waterloo. The workers laid wreaths at these offices to mark the death of jobs in the refinery!

Scandalously, nobody from these bodies was prepared to talk to the workers and neither were the press! So to get media coverage, the workers marched to the royal Courts of Justice in the Strand to protest as Cameron gave evidence to the Leveson inquiry! That got them noticed! The first redundancies could take place as soon as next week and Unite must be prepared to step up protests and action.

The NSSN has organised the following public meeting with Unite: Monday, 18 June ‘Support the Coryton Workers: Stop the Jobs massacre!’ Speakers from Coryton Unite, Linda McCulloch (Unite National Officer for the Chemicals sector), NSSN, Visteon 2009 Occupation, Right to Work. Pitsea Leisure Centre, Northlands Pavement, Pitsea, Basildon, Essex SS13 3DU 7.30pm.

Hundreds of workers on the Runcorn thermal power station construction site have protested and walked out http://bit.ly/MEtFVh

DUMP IT workers in Sheffield took more strike action this week and also lobbied the local council. http://tinyurl.com/d8xxvn3

MMP workers ended their 16-week dispute after a lockout and huge international campaign. They can’t discuss the deal, but apparently an Austrian newspaper reports that it is pretty damn good! Congratulations & solidarity from NSSN.

KIRKLEES Council workers strike against cuts.

Over 400 mainly women Unison members who are affected by the review of Kirklees council's business support function are taking the brunt of the council's cuts programme by being threatened with redundancy or having cuts in their pay. Unison members agreed to step up the action by striking on 12th, 13th and 14th June! The union branch has asked the national union to ballot the whole branch. Please send donations and messages of support to: Kirklees Unison branch secretary, West Yorkshire House, New North Parade, Huddersfield HD1 5JP.

Congratulations to lay members of the University and College Union (UCU) who have led a grassroots victory against the national leadership in resuming industrial action over the Unified Superannuation Scheme (USS) pension. Congress agreed the February suspension of the industrial action by the UCU national leadership was counter to the democratic mandate of the membership.

VICTIMISATION

Carillion: GMB report identifies 224 victims of CARILLION blacklisting across the UK. This GMB report pulls back the curtain of secrecy to give a glimpse as to the way that employers like Carillion have illegally used their power and money to blacklist citizens and to deny them their rights to employment.’ says Paul Kenny, GMB General Secretary. http://bit.ly/LLY1ZQ

DEFEND THE FOUR - Following five years of a witch hunt by Unison’s leadership against Brian Debus, Glenn Kelly, Onay Kasab, and Suzanne Muna, an Employment Tribunal and an Employment Appeals Tribunal have both declared that they were subjected to 'unjustifiable disciplinary action' by UNISON. Unbelievably, UNISON is going to spend another £100,000 of members' money appealing this decision! Please sign and distribute the petition:
