Coryton
refinery workers fight closures
11 June
Protests hit the Coryton refinery today amid
warnings that its closure could see over £100 million drained
from the economy.

Over 100 workers and supporters gathered at the
gates of the refinery in protest against the administration of
the company. One steward remarked if the closure goes through it
will be the third refinery shut down in 10 years. This will mean
the permanent loss of hundreds of well paid jobs from the
region.
As Unite steward Brian Bellow explaind; "All we
are doing is trying to put pressure on this government to
support hundreds of workers who will be thrown onto the
scrapheap"
The protest then marched to the nearby town of
Corringham to bolster public support

Further protests are planned for tomorrow (12
June) at the Esso refinery in Purfleet at 1:30 PM.
