national strike: Private sector joins pensions battle

Unilever, a massive food, drink and cleaning products
multinational, will see it's first national strike action this week over
pensions. In the aftermath of November 30th and the governments rhetoric of
"gold plaited" public sector pensions versus private sector, the NSSN believes
this will be a significant dispute. The following article is an appeal for
solidarity from a union activist at Unilever. The NSSN urges all its readers and
supports to visit picket lines in solidarity with this important dispute.
Dear all,
Our members in Unilever nationally have voted to take national strike action
over pensions (85% for strike, 92% for action short of a strike).
This is the first time Unilever has ever taken national strike action and for
most sites, the only time they have ever taken any form of industrial action.
Comrades' support on picket lines would therefore be very much appreciated and
it would be great if we could get some public sector pension strike placards
there as well to link the fights between private and public sector pensions and
show solidarity.
Our members are starting with a 24 hour strike on Friday 9th December; as is
often the case, it starts at different times on different sites to fit in with
shift patterns, and in some cases will start on Thursday evening and others
finish on Saturday 10th December. However, the main focus including press will
be for the Friday morning, in particular between 7am and 10am but they will be
there all through the day.
