Shop stewards call for Bombardier
nationalisation
21 July
The people of Derby
and beyond will be demonstrating, quite literally, their feelings
about the devastation being wreaked at Bombardier and cuts in general,
when they form thousands on Saturday marching through the city.
Dave Gorton, Midlands
coordinator of the National Shop Stewards Network, said today; The
awarding of the Thameslink contract to Siemens is yet another kick in
the teeth for manufacturing workers. This will heap misery upon misery
for not only the Bombardier workforce and those thousands in the
supply chain, but for the city itself. The retail industry will suffer
immensely with the loss of spending power.
The ConDem coalition
are hiding behind EU rules on competition - it is nonsense to
believe that an elected government cant have an influence on the
decision where to award this contract.
David Cameron brought
his whole cabinet to Derby earlier this year to pledge his support for
manufacturing industry in the area.
Where is that support
now?, asked Mr Gorton, Like all the other pledges from both this and
previous governments, workers are seeing them for the empty promises
they are.
In 1973, the then
Conservative government nationalised Rolls Royce to save it from going
under - they can do the same again with Bombardier. In fact, the whole
rail industry should be renationalised immediately.
The banks were rescued
- with our money - when the economy went bust; but when it comes to
workers livelihoods, our rulers turn their backs. They wont be the
ones who suffer, of course.
Saturdays
demonstration can signal the beginning of a fightback against this
government and their system. Derby will show it will not be beaten
into submission by the forces of big business who exist to make
massive profits for themselves at the expense of the rest of us.
After the rally on Saturday, the NSSN is hosting a meeting in The
Flowerpot pub to which all are invited. Alex Gordon, President of the
rail, maritime and transport union RMT, has been invited to speak on
the way forward for Bombardier workers and all those interested in
mounting a campaign against the most vicious cuts in this county for
several generations |
