Sunday’s NSSN rally before the start of TUC Congress in Brighton was a fantastic success. Militant trade unionists from both the leadership of some of the most fighting unions and the rank and file spoke to 250 Congress delegates and union and anti-cuts campaigners. Everyone sent their best wishes to PCS General Secretary Mark Serwotka who was admitted to hospital last week. As expected, the Tory Trade Union Bill passed its 3rd reading last night November 10th. It now goes to the Lords. But we must keep up the pressure and prepare for resisting it of it becomes law. A rally organised by the Trade Union Coordinating Group (TUCG) made it clear this attack on trade union rights would not pass without resistance. Over 1,000 fire-fighters from across the UK gathered in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, for a national demonstration on 9 December, their latest day of strike action over pensions. FBU national executive rep Ricky Matthews was employed by Buckinghamshire Fire Authority. He was sacked for taking part in the last round of strikes. The demonstration was a massive show of support for Ricky Matthews and Bucks FBU members.

At a Romford rail station site in east London last week, 15 agency construction workers who were suffering being paid via the umbrella company scam called a Unite official to the site. They were seeking help in putting forward their demand that they be employed directly by the building services contractor company T. Clarke. In a meeting between Unite reps and Clarke’s management it was agreed that Clarke would consider the request for the 13 to be directly employed.
