The fourth annual conference of the Yorkshire Shop Stewards Network was held in Leeds on Saturday 5th March, attended by representatives from ten different trade unions from across the region. Opening the “Stop the Union Busters” morning session, Andy Budds (RMT transport union executive member) said it was no accident that it had been the Tory transport minister who first announced the (anti) Trade Union Bill because the government wants to break the RMT. Recalling that his union’s former general secretary, the late Bob Crow, had been accused of being a ‘dinosaur’, Andy asked “who’s the real dinosaurs?” when the […]

GMB members gathered to picket and protest outside the of United Utilities’ Warrington HQ at Lingley Mere, Great Sankey, in a protest over pensions. In September of 2015 organisers of Unite the Union’s Unite Community project and officers of the National Shop Stewards Network began to interact, with an aim toward building a common purpose for advancing the causes of the wider labour movement. What the two groups had in common beyond working-class aims was a common enemy in the multi-billionaire scourge of Sports Direct UK’s owner, Newcastle United Football Club megalomaniac Mike Ashley.   Together the Unite the Union and NSSN’s north east section mounted campaigns against Sports Direct in this socialist heartland. Defending health & safety: ‘We are in the fight of our lives!’

July 27, 2015 in News

In December 2012 16 year old Cameron Minshull of Bury, Greater Manchester, started work at Huntley Mount Engineering .  He was over the moon and his mum was so pleased she drove him to work every day.  Five weeks later he was dead, killed by the lathe he worked on. Cameron was untrained and unsupervised, over-dressed against the January cold in a freezing factory .  All the lathes had had their guards disabled, and Cameron’s sleeve had caught in the machinery, drawing him in and causing fatal head injuries. It’s rare for bosses to be sent to prison for health […]
